2005: #16 – The Austere Academy (Lemony Snicket)

March 1, 2005January 14, 2021

Book 16 was A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book the Fifth — The Austere Academy. Mr. Snicket switched things up a little bit here. Unlike the first 4 books, this book didn’t end with Count Olaf quickly escaping and the Baudelaires just left to move on to a new home. Nope, this book ends with a kidnapping! There also was the introduction of a couple

2005: #15 – F is for Fugitive (Sue Grafton)

February 27, 2005January 14, 2021

Book #15 was the 6th book in Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone/Alphabet series, F is for Fugitive. I didn’t think this book was as good as the previous ones. There seemed to be a lot of emphasis on the setting, it was really slow going (I think I was over halfway through before there was a real clue), and the time line got confusing somewhere in

2005: #14 – Rosemary’s Baby (Ira Levin)

February 20, 2005January 14, 2021

Book #14 was the incredible Rosemary’s Baby, by Ira Levin. Like most people, I at least knew the basic premise behind Rosemary’s Baby, but I had never read the book or even seen the movie. “Disquieting” is perhaps the perfect word to describe this book. There is just this subtle thread of dread throughout the entire story that is amazing. I highly, highly recommend it.

2005: #13 – Mind Prey (John Sandford)

February 17, 2005January 14, 2021

I finished book #13 over lunch. It was Mind Prey, the 7th book in John Sandford’s Prey/Lucas Davenport series. I’ve read several of these books, and really enjoy them. Davenport is an interesting character. His relations with women are always amusing. Page count: 3,716/15,000

I really liked the heart of this book. I loved April and her unapologetic geekiness, and I liked what Dade has to say about body positivity, and that she wrote a male protagonist that walks the talk. What I wasn’t expecting was just how detailed into the fanfiction subculture this was going to go. It’s one of the few times I’ve started a book and
