2010: #Readathon – Final Check-in

First of all, a giant thanks to everyone who’s left comments to cheer me on.  I really appreciate it!

Unfortunately, my read-a-thon petered out a few hours ago.  After the last update, I read another 54 pages of Tapestry of Love and then listened to another 50 minutes of Don’t Fall Down, which is growing on me.  But then I decided to move on to other things.  I may not have had the marathon mentality today, but I did reach a goal.  I wanted to make some progress in Tapestry of Love, and I did.  And even better, I’m really enjoying it.  I hadn’t had the time to dedicate to it in the last week or so, so this was useful.

All of you who will be burning the midnight oil with your books tonight, I salute you!

2010: #Readathon – Check-in #2

I’ve made a little bit of progress in the last few hours.  Not too bad, considering I spent a good part of the 2nd half of the football game with my eyes closed.

I finished off Morrigan’s Cross, roughly 18 pages.  I’m not the biggest fan of Nora Roberts’ supernatural work, so it was really just okay.  Nice for quick reading, though.  I’ve also made a little more progress in Tapestry of Love, 37 pages. As you see, I’m not the fastest, nor the most focused, reader around. My totals for the day so far are:

  • Morrigan’s Cross – 32 pages
  • Tapestry of Love – 41 pages
  • Don’t Look Down – 1 hour

I think my next plan of attack is to read more of Tapestry of Love. And be a good girl and turn off the TV when I’m done with the game (any minute now). When I get tired of reading with my eyes, I think I may turn the audio book back on and get some cataloguing done. I’ve a mind to catalogue my e-books in my LibraryThing account. Hopefully I don’t need to go pick up Scott — he should be able to get a ride back home, and then they’ll be in the basement brewing beer for a few hours.  And out of my hair Smile

Happy reading!

2010: #Readathon – 1st Check-in

Man, it’s already been a busy morning!  What hour are we in now? Four?

I managed to crawl out of bed around 8:30, but immediately had to shower and get ready.  Scott was offered a couple of free tickets to the game, so I needed to drop him off downtown (and pick up his buddy for the day and the tickets) before my haircut at 11.  It was tight, especially with Blacksburg football traffic.  I had to be creative in my choice of routes.

I did manage to fit in a little bit of reading in the 9:00 hour:

I got my hair cut and then went to get groceries, which gave me an opportunity to start a new audiobook: Don’t Look Down by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer.  An interesting combination of authors, but so far, so good.  I was able to listen to an hour of it, between shopping and then coming home, taking care of the groceries, cleaning my kitchen, and making lunch (chicken/feta/spinach sausage and garlic couscous, if you’re curious).

Now, I’m finally able to sit on my couch with my lunch, laptop, books, and the Hokie game (which I’m starting from the beginning thanks to my DVR).  Since I just watched Central Michigan score on the opening drive, I’m afraid it’s going to be a long game. Whoops! Tyrod just ran all the way down the field for a touchdown, so things are lookin’ up!

I’m going to take some time to check out other people’s blogs now.  Thank you to everyone who’s commented this morning!

2010: Readathon – The Pre-Read Post

I still don’t have a plan for tomorrow’s read-a-thon. I have a feeling it’s going to be a super casual affair.  I am getting a haircut at 11 (gotta have it before we go on our little anniversary trip next Thursday!), and then I’ll probably get groceries, and there’s a football game to watch. And truthfully, I’m not sure I’m really feeling the urge for an all-day read-fest, so we’ll just see how it goes.

I have already received a message from a cheerleader.  Thank you MisterBIP!

Have I shared my National Book Festival experience?  I don’t think so.  I only stuck around for a few hours, but I enjoyed it while I was there.

I went in to DC with my husband and his parents, and we arrived at the Mall about an hour before the first speakers began. We snatched up our free tote bags, and then made our way through the Pavilion of the States, where every state (and a few other territories and organizations) had a table.  I picked up a number of bookmarks and information about other book festivals.

Then, I headed to the Contemporary Life tent to find a seat before Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman) and listened to the latter half of Spike Mendelsohn’s presentation, which was entertaining.  He was happy to take questions not only about his cookbook but about Top Chef. In between presentations, my husband and his dad wandered off to be otherwise entertained (they ended up touring the Capitol building), so it was just my mother-in-law and I for the rest of the morning.

After PW, I bee lined to the fiction tent to try to find a spot to see Diana Gabaldon.  The tent was packed, but we found a spot where I could mostly hear.  Afterwards, I ran into Deborah and Jenn! I would have loved to run in to some other people (I know Swapna and others were in that tent somewhere), but it turned out to be much more crowded than I could have ever anticipated.  Next year, we need to all wear hats.

And have I mentioned how hot it was? That’s part of the reason why we left around two.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.

I brought a few books with me with the thought of maybe getting them signed, but I didn’t really have the desire to wait in line in all that heat.  So instead I ended up in the book sales tent, where I was able to buy an already autographed copy of Diana Gabaldon’s An Echo in the Bone, so I didn’t feel too bad about it.

After our escape from the sweltering book sales tent, we headed back to fiction and caught the latter half of Julia Glass’s presentation, which I have to confess to not being very interested in.  She read a portion of her book, and it wasn’t enough to keep my interest.  But really, most of us were there because the next speaker was Ken Follett. Who was simply fabulous.  I think I could listen to him talk and tell stories all day.

There were a few other people I wouldn’t have minded seeing (Karin Slaughter, for one), but sticking around in the heat until 4 in the afternoon didn’t feel like a good idea.  We were hot enough and starving enough to call it a day in DC, so we hopped back on the subway and rode it back to New Carrollton, then topped off the day with a late lunch, a movie, and milkshakes.

Can’t wait to go back next year.

2010: 24-Hour Readathon & The National Book Festival

I am hereby announcing my intent to participate in the next 24-Hour Readathon on October 9. So now I have to do it, right? :-)

As usual, I will be attacking it with a "come-what-may" attitude. There will definitely be a viewing of the Hokie game (we play Central Michigan that Saturday), but this wouldn’t be the first time I read during a football game. I have no idea what I will or won’t read, or how much I’ll actually read. But that is the way I roll!

bookfest In other news, I’m off to the National Book Festival this weekend! I will be unapologetically dragging my husband and my in-laws from Baltimore to the National Mall on Saturday, where they will probably promptly abandon me for the Air & Space Museum. I’m really hoping to run into other book bloggers there, but unfortunately I can’t make it to the dinner that Swapna has so graciously arranged (see: husband and in-laws). I’ve never been to the NBF before, so I have no idea what to expect.  But here’s my tentative schedule of presentations:

10:35 – 11:05 Ree Drummond (or Suzanne Collins if the tent isn’t majorly crowded)
11:00 – 11:30 Diana Gabaldon
11:35 – 12:05 Elizabeth Kostova
12:45 – 1:15 Ken Follett
2:05 – 3:05 Orhan Pamuk (or hanging around the signings tent)
4:15 – 4:45 Karin Slaughter

Depending on the boredom level of the rest of the family, I may not be sticking around as long as Karin Slaughter’s presentation. I’m bringing some books with me to try to get signed, but if the lines are really long I’ll probably skip it.

If anyone’s interested in meeting up with me, I’ll probably be twittering my location throughout the day, and will try to keep an eye on it.  Also, my cell number is on Swapna’s contact list, please feel free to text me!

I hope to see you there!

2010: #Readathon – Wrap-up

I don’t know about you, but I thought it was a pretty successful read-a-thon! Here are my final stats:

Number of books completed: 3 1/2

Pages read: 668 + 2:28 on audio

Time spent reading: 10:10

Mini-challenges completed: Hour One meme

I don’t think that’s too bad! I had more total reading time than I had last read-a-thon, but I quit at about the same time (11PM). I just can’t do super late nights anymore! Especially since I’m out of the house until after 10 on Sunday nights due to APA league.  Missing all that sleep would kill me on Monday morning.

Which hour was most daunting for you? Funny enough, the hardest hour for me was Hour Two!  That darn benadryl.  I think getting out the of the house for grocery shopping in the afternoon helped me past that mid-afternoon sleepy-time.

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? The book that held my interest best was In Ecstasy, and not only because it was YA.  It had two alternating points of view that kept you interested. Basically, anything you don’t have to think too hard about is good.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I saw someone else (I wish I could remember who) suggest a better plan for the cheerleaders.  Things were pretty quiet around here until the evening. Also, I’m a fan of the memes! I would like more memes.  They give me something besides stats to blog about each time I update.

What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? I thought the official posts were short and sweet and to the point.

How many books did you read? I read from 7 books.  I completed one book that I started pre-read-a-thon, read two from start to finish, and gave up on one.

What were the names of the books you read?

  • Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie
  • So Much For That by Lionel Shriver
  • Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint by Nancy Kress
  • Dark Entries by Ian Rankin (art by Werther Dell’edera)
  • Pretty Little Mistakes by Heather McElhatton
  • Beneath the Blood Red Moon by Shannon Drake
  • In Ecstasy by Kate McCaffrey

Which book did you enjoy most? That’s a hard call! In Ecstasy was good because it was short and sweet.  Dark Entries was good because it was the first graphic novel I’ve read in a while, and I thought the story was interested.

Which did you enjoy least? Pretty Little Mistakes

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? I will almost definitely participate in future read-a-thons as a reader, as long as the dates work out.

Thanks to the organizers and all the cheerleaders! I hope you had a great Read-a-thon!

2010: #Readathon – Hour Sixteen

This will be my last update of the night…

I think this is the end for me! I completed another book, but I think I’m going to bed.  I’ll probably read a little bit more before I sleep, so I’ll report any additional pages in my wrap-up post tomorrow.  To those of you braving the dark hours of the night, good luck!

We’ve been to dinner and back (Mexican, yum), and now I’m settled back in on the couch for as long as I can stay awake.  I think I’m going to shake things up for this next stretch, and read a YA book that’s been sitting in my review pile for ages — In Ecstasy by Kate McCaffrey.  After that, I’ll probably go back to my "a chapter here, a chapter there" strategy.

I have to confess… the pull of the TV is strong, this evening.

2010: #Readathon – Hour Eleven

Title of book(s) read since last update:

  • Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint – 11 pgs (on 130/225)

Reading Pretty Little Mistakes is like reading a series of short stories. Unfortunately, I found it to be more of a novelty than a novel. I read through 5 or 6 storylines before I got bored.  Since I died rather horribly each time (twice in a plane crash!), I thought it was a bit depressing.  I think she should have mixed a few more happy endings in, and maybe made some of the stories go on longer.  I read it looking for the nostalgia of the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books I read as a kid, but it didn’t do it for me. Back onto PaperbackSwap it goes!

2010: #Readathon – Hour Nine

And I’m back! Just in time for hour nine. All of my running around for the day is complete, and I’m settled down with my pepsi one and baked doritos. We’ll go out for dinner later, but not for a few hours yet!

Title of book(s) read since last update:

  • Inner Harbor (audio) -  2:28 (2:25/8:54 left)

Number of books completed since you started: 2

Pages read since last update: 0

Running total of pages read since you started: 283

Amount of time spent reading since last update:  2:28

Running total of time spent reading since you started: 4:58

Mini-challenges completed: Hour One meme

Next, I’m going to work some more on So Much For That and Characters & Emotion & Viewpoint, and I think I’ll start Pretty Little Mistakes: A Do-Over Novel. I also need to pick out my next book on the Kindle, so I have something to read while we’re going to dinner.

Hope your read-a-thon has been going well!

2010: #Readathon – Hour Six

Progress!

Title of book(s) read since last update:

  • Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint – 4 pgs (on 119/225)
  • Dark Entries - 149 pgs (completed!)

Running total of time spent reading since you started: 2:30

Mini-challenges completed: Hour One meme

Now, I have to do some real world stuff.  Need to eat lunch, take a shower, and head out for some grocery shopping.  I should be able to make some headway on my audiobook in the process.

2010: #Readathon – Hour Four

Leeeeeeeeetle bit of a slow start for me. Not only did a get a late start, but after a half an hour reading, I had to close my eyes for a bit.  You see, I made the mistake of taking a benadryl.  I have a patch of hives I’m really trying to get rid of (it’s a long sordid tale involving a dermatologist, 12 stitches, and a bad reaction to some neosporin). Unfortunately, I forgot how much benadryl knocks me out!  So, I had to nap, and started reading again at 10:25.  But, I have completed one book, so I think that’s progress. While trying to wake up, I decided to pick up my one graphic novel — Dark Entries by Ian Rankin.  It’s good so far!

Thanks for all the great comments!

Title of book(s) read since last update:

2010: #Readathon – Hour One

I’m getting a late start, but I’m almost ready to go.  Cats have been fed, the book I needed to mail is in the mailbox, the couch has been cleaned off, and I’m working on breakfast (cinnamon-sugar toast and a glass of milk).

Here’s my Hour One Meme:

Where are you reading from today?

My house, mostly. And in my house, probably on my couch, mostly.  I may sit outside for a little while this afternoon, after it warms up.  Some reading might be done in the car, cuz we’re debating whether to go down to the International Fair in Blacksburg for lunch. And some might be done in Walmart via audiobook cuz I think I’m going to need to go grocery shopping.

3 facts about me …

I usually don’t read a lot on the weekends. The bulk of my reading is done at lunchtime during the week and before I go to bed at night.

I have over 700 unread books in my house.  PROBLEM!

I have two cats that will probably ignore me most of the day.

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?

I have no set amount.  I guess the number is 700+!

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

No set goals, other than to read as much as I can stand.

I think I’m ready to get started! Here are my starting places in all my books:

So Much For That: pg 16/433

Murder at the Vicarage (Kindle): Location 3185/3601 (88%)

Inner Harbor (audio): 4:58/8:54

Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint: pg 112/225

Official start time: 8:40AM!

2010: #Readathon – The Un-Plan, and a Hero

So the 24-Hour Read-a-Thon is tomorrow, and truthfully, I have no plan.  I know I won’t make it the full 24 hours, I’ll be lucky if I make it past midnight, but I’ll do the best I can. I’ll probably go grocery shopping in the afternoon, but I usually listen to an audiobook while I’m shopping, so I have that covered.  I’ll try to update every hour I’m reading, but more likely it’ll be closer to every 2 hours.  Maybe an hour and a half. As to *what* I’ll be reading, I have four things in the works right now:

I’ll almost definitely get Murder at the Vicarage and the Characters book finished.  I’m only about 12 pages into So Much For That, so I’m not sure how suitable that’s going to turn out to be.  We’ll see.  I won’t finish Inner Harbor (I have about 4 1/2 hours left), but I will get a small chunk of it done. If the Shriver book doesn’t work out, I have lots of other lighter reads to choose from.  Maybe I’ll finally start Westerfeld’s Uglies series. Or read some romances. Who knows, the world is my oyster!

Sorry, got a little excited there.

Also, I saw this on HLN this morning, and I thought it was a really nice story about the good a love of reading can do.

Happy reading!

2009: Sunday Salon – Read-a-Thon Retrospective

Well I’ve completed (sorta) my first Read-a-Thon! I really only read for about 8 hours total, but I knew when I started that there was no way I’d be staying up all night, and I had some other obligations.  But I had fun squeezing in what I could!

Which hour was most daunting for you?

Other than the 11pm hour when I called it quits, 2-3pm required a nap.

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

I think anything that’s really fast paced is good for Thonin’.  I didn’t read him this time, but James Patterson would probably be perfect.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

Nope!

What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

I thought all the giveaways were really amazing.

How many books did you read?

I read from a total of 6 books, and completed 1.

What were the names of the books you read?

  • How to Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford
  • The Ultimate Weight Solution by Dr. Phil
  • Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
  • The Maze Runner by James Dashner
  • Seize the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon
  • Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

Which book did you enjoy most?

How to Say Goodbye in Robot was really quite good.  I also liked Seize the Night, because it’s quick and steamy.

Which did you enjoy least?

Dr. Phil.  I’m still debating if it’s worth it to read the whole thing.

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

I would love to participate again as a reader! I have to admit, I’m not a very good Cheerleader.  As long as the date works out for me, I should be able to do it!

And a BIG thank you to everyone who stopped by here and posted encouragement! Getting those comments in my inbox was a nice boost!

2009: #Readathon – Hour 16

That’s a wrap! I’m bushed.  It’s time to go to bed.

Title of book(s) read since last update:

  • Seize the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon (77 pages – on 170/325)

Number of books finished since started: 1
Pages read since last update: 77
Running total of pages read since started: 517 + 50 minutes audio
Amount of time spent reading since last update: 45 min
Running total of time spent reading since started: 7hrs 20min
Mini-challenges completed: Where in the World is the Read-a-Thon?, Mid-Event Meme

I’m sure I’ll get a few more pages read before I sleep, but I won’t be updating again until tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone who’s still reading!

2009: #Readathon – Mid-Event Meme

1. What are you reading right now?

I have bookmarks in 4 books — Seize the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon, The Maze Runner by James Dashner, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, and The Ultimate Weight Solution by Dr. Phil.  My main focus right now is Seize the Night.

2. How many books have you read so far?

I’ve finished one.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

Since the second half of the readathon is going to be pretty short lived for me, I’m looking forward to getting as much of the Kenyon read as I can.

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?

I did bow out of the microbrew festival that my husband went to… But that was better for both of us.

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Did some chauffeur duty, and then did a ghost walk tonight.  I just did them! Not much to deal with.  I had a call from my mother too, but that didn’t take too long.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

I thought I might be able to read a little faster than I have been.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

Nope!

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?

I think I would probably have fewer books going at once.

9. Are you getting tired yet?

Yes, a bit.  I probably won’t be up for more than a couple more hours.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?

Nope! I’m still a newbie at this.

Things fell apart a bit once Hour 11 hit! Scott needed to be picked up, and then almost immediately after we headed to Salem for a ghost walk.  We stopped for Chinese on the way home so I didn’t get home until about 10 minutes ago.  And there was no reading during the ride, because I ended up doing all of the driving.

But no big deal! I knew in advance that I wouldn’t be doing all 24 hours.  I’m going to try to squeeze in a little more before I go to bed.

Round-about 5pm, I decided I needed to switch things up a bit.  All of the wholesomeness of YA was getting to me and I decided I needed something a little steamy.  So I grabbed a Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark-Hunter book from my shelf! Yum.

And then I got interrupted by a phone call from my mom and a lot of drama with my brother, his daughter, and her (criminal, apparently) mother. Argh.  It looks like my brother is going to be flying halfway across the country very soon to take custody of her.  As he should.

Anyway, back to Kenyon I go! At least, until Scott calls me for a ride.  Which should be soon.

Feeling refreshed now.  And starting to get into The Maze Runner. So many unknowns!

I suspect that I’ll have to be running back to Blacksburg to pick up Scott in the next hour or so.
