2009: Challenges – 24 Hour Read-a-Thon

lg-new-readathonbutton-border So did I mention that I’ve officially decided to participate in the 24 Hour Read-a-Thon?

This will be my first Read-a-Thon, so I have no expectations.  It’s on October 24th, which is the perfect Saturday for it to fall on.  There’s no VT football game that weekend, and the trip we were originally planning to Baltimore is happening the next weekend instead. The timing couldn’t be better!

I really don’t have a plan for the Read-a-Thon.  I’ve been hemming and hawing about pre-choosing books, and I just can’t bring myself to do it.  I don’t like to plan ahead.  I think what I’ll likely do is start with finishing whatever book I happen to be reading at the time, and then probably work through some YA and chick-lit books I have in my review piles. I also will consider some of the romantic suspense/paranormal romances hanging around in my TBR collection.  Sherrilyn Kenyon is always a quick light read, and I have a few of her books still hanging around.

I have no expectations about how much reading I’m actually going to do, or how many books I’ll finish.  I have no idea! But I’m gonna try to have fun doing it.

I would avoid using too many review books, personally. For one thing, you then have a ton of reviews to write and occasionally some fall by the wayside after the Readathon, and it is always better if those aren’t review books. YA and chick-lit are great Readathon genres, though, so it might be okay. As long as I’m giving unsolicited advice, I actually would recommend pre-selecting some books. The last thing you want is to be starting at all of your bookshelves trying to figure out what to read in the middle of the Readathon. I usually make a pile of 3-4 times more books than I could possibly read that are good Readathon books, keep them by me during the Readathon, and choose from there.

I’m not too concerned about the review part… I review everything I read, whether it’s technically a review copy or not. I have a good idea of what books I’ll attack, I just can’t bring myself to pull them from the shelves yet!

I’m glad to see you’re joining us for the read-a-thon. Having YA and chick lit around is a great idea. If you read graphic novels, try having a few of those around too. Good luck.

Sounds like you have the right idea. I’ve gathered quite a stack, but I’m trying to keep myself from scheduling out what I’ll be reading when (which is harder for this compulsive scheduler/organizer).
